I've spent the last few weeks working on a calligraphy family tree for Roger and his daughter Kate. They had an original which dated back to the late 1980s, and an extra 19 family members to add.

I wanted to honour the design of my clients' treasured family tree art, which had clearly been an important document for the family for many years. We agreed on a similar red ink and a gothic look to the calligraphy names.
The title was really striking in Lombardic capitals, so I used a similar style. And the red roses - as anyone from Lancashire will know, that's important! They had to stay.
I updated some of the details, incorporating my own style in the illustrations. A new border design with leaves, a few more red roses, some swirly bits - and 23 carat gold leaf on the red roses and across the title of the tree.
This has been a lovely challenge, and the commission has taken a month to complete, from initial enquiries to approval of proofs, the lengthy process of measuring for layout and alignment, and the calligraphy design itself.
Calligraphy family trees are an aspect of my work which I really enjoy. They require extreme focus - I completed most of this before the arrival of our two new rescue kittens!
Prices start from £300 for an unframed family tree with up to 30 names, dates and locations of birth and death.
