I was asked to write a version of the Serenity Prayer in calligraphy, gilding the words God and Jesus with 23 carat gold leaf.
The lettering is written with a pointed nib, in Kuretake Sumi ink, and in a flowing, modern calligraphy style.
Popular poems and prayers mean the world to people, and it's an honour and a privilege to be asked to scribe them beautifully so they can be displayed as a daily reminder.
The Serenity Prayer: religious version
God grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can
And wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace
Taking, as Jesus did, this sinful world
As it is, not as I would have it
Trusting that He will make all things right
If I surrender to His Will
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life
And supremely happy with Him
Forever and ever in the next. Amen.
There are many versions of this prayer, which is widely used by those in recovery from addictions. It's a beautiful piece of writing to inspire faith and hope, and for those who don't follow a religion, an uplifting shorter version is:
Grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can
And wisdom to know the difference.
